Local Door Alignment Repairs in London

Most of the time, the lock isn’t the real issue — it’s the alignment between the door, the strike plate, and the door frame.

We fix this kind of thing all over London for houses, shops, offices and flats. Loose hinges, dropped frames, worn screw holes, or a latch that doesn’t line up with the strike plate hole — it’s all common stuff.

It takes almost nothing — a loose hinge, wood swelling, someone leaning on the door wrong — and suddenly the door won’t behave.

Why Your Door Isn’t Closing Correctly

There are a few reasons a door not closing properly turns up out of nowhere. Doors move, hinges shift, and small gaps change over time.

Common causes include:

  • Loose hinges pulling the door down

  • The top hinge slipping because all the screws are loose

  • Old screw holes that don’t grab anymore

  • A door swelling slightly with temperature or humidity

  • A worn latch rubbing on the door jamb

  • A strike plate sitting too high or too low

  • The latch not lining up with the strike at all

  • A frame that’s been knocked or settled unevenly

  • Paint buildup around the edges

  • A new lock installed without adjusting the frame

If any of these sound familiar, you’re not alone — it’s one of the most common door issues in London homes.

Interior Doors Behave Differently

An interior door doesn’t have the weight or hardware of a front door.

Inside the house, doors are lighter. Hollow cores, thin timber, sometimes a bit of MDF pretending to be wood — they don’t take much to shift.

Bathroom Doors: One of the Most Common Complaints

Bathroom doors are the worst for it.

Your bathroom door is a bit dramatic. It swells when you shower, dries out during the day, expands, contracts — it’s a whole thing. Because of that, the latch stops lining up and the door won’t stay shut unless you yank it.

We sort that by checking:

  • the hinges

  • the latch position

  • the strike plate

  • any swelling spots

  • paint build-up

  • rubbing points

One small misalignment? Suddenly, nothing will sit in place! It’s usually a quick fix.

The Lipstick Test — Finding the Exact Point of the Problem

One of the simplest ways to check a latch problem is what we call the lipstick test. You dab a tiny bit of lipstick, chalk, or even marker on the latch, shut the door gently, and see where the mark hits the strike plate.

This tells you:

  • if the latch is too high (the top hinge has probably dropped)

  • too low (the opposite of above)

  • too far forward (the door isn’t sitting in the frame correctly)

  • or missing the opening completely (the latch is missing the plate)

That little test saves a lot of wasted time. Tells you exactly where to work.

Fixing a Door That Won’t Stay Shut

Once you know where the latch is landing, the job gets simpler. Not quick in every case, but simpler.

Tighten the Door Hinges

Most of the time, the hinge screws just need tightening. But not a half-turn — properly tightened. And if the screws don’t grab, that means the holes are done. We fill them, drill fresh ones, or stick longer screws in that reach proper wood deeper inside the frame.

Adjust the Strike Plate

If the latch is off by only a bit, we move the strike plate, redrill the screw holes, and seat it where it should’ve been from the beginning. A tiny movement can make the whole latch work like new.

Sometimes the opening in the strike is too tight and just needs a touch from a metal file. Nothing fancy.

Lift the Door

If the latch is too low, the door has dropped. Happens a lot in older places. We pack behind the hinge, lift it slightly, and the latch and plate line up again. The difference a millimetre makes is ridiculous.

Trim the Door Edge

If the door’s swollen — heat, moisture, whatever — it rubs the frame and throws the latch out. We trim the edge neatly so it swings without sticking. Rarely much wood, just enough to get smooth operation again.

Old Screw Holes: The Hidden Cause of Door Latch Trouble

This causes more alignment problems than people think. A worn screw hole means the hinge sits wrong. When the hinge sits wrong, the door hangs wrong. When the door hangs wrong, the latch misses. And when the latch misses, the door pops open.

We:

  • fill the holes

  • drill fresh points

  • add deeper screws

  • sometimes replace the hinge

Once the hinge is anchored, the whole door behaves again.

When a Repair Isn’t Enough

Most of the time, we get the door closing again without replacing anything major. But sometimes the door continues to case issues, particulalry if:

  • the frame is twisted

  • the latch is damaged

  • the strike plate is mangled

  • the door edge is warped

  • the hinge positions are beyond saving

  • a new door was installed badly

When that’s the case, replacement might make more sense. But fixing is always tried first. Cheaper. Faster. More sensible.

FAQs – Door Not Closing Properly

What’s the lipstick test?

A simple way to see exactly where the latch hits the strike plate.

Why won’t my bathroom door stay shut?

Bathrooms cause swelling in the wood, knocking the latch out of place and causing door misalignment and sticking when opening and closing the door.

Can you fix a new door that won’t shut?

Yes — even brand-new doors can be misaligned from installation.

Can a metal file and screwdriver be useful when dealing with strike plate issues?

Yes, a metal file can be useful for filing down the strike plate to ensure it sits flush within the door. A screwdriver is also useful to remove the strike plate.
